Working in a strong wind I find exhilarating even if the easel has to be weighed or tied down.

Olive tree on a hillside

DR139 Olive tree. Charcoal on paper 38 x 56 cm Neil Bolton Fine Art Painter
Plein air drawing of an Olive tree on a hillside in Andalusia. This particular mountainous region can be surprisingly windy making drawing board and easel unstable unlike my subject which has endured many years of elemental forces. More work from this series can be seen on my website

Early Spring, Andalusia.

PA751 Early Spring Andalusia. Oil on paper 30 x 40 cm Neil Bolton Fine Art Painter

Painted on location in Spain, you will have to imagine the heavily scented air and the massed choir of attendant bees.

Sierra Maroma, Andalusia, Spain

PA741 Maroma, Invierno. Oil on canvas 40 x 60 cm Neil Bolton Fine Art Painter

Painted in rough changeable weather, the easel and canvas blown to the ground on a few occasions by powerful gusts of mountain wind that happen without warning and surprise with their ferocity. This range of mountains are close to my sister's house and form an impressive backdrop to the lower surrounding foothills

Olive trees, Spain

PA739 Olive trees, Spain. Oil on paper 38 x 56 cm Neil Bolton Fine Art Painter

Painted on location during my recent painting trip to Andalusia, Spain. Olive trees for me are a fascinating and absorbing subject to paint, the foliage presents an enigmatic range of colours in the strong Southern sunlight of Spain; warm blue greens to steely greys contrasting at times with strong shadows. This group of trees are at the end of my sister's garden in rural Andalusia and are tended by farmers who I have seen ploughing the ground beneath the trees using mules to draw the plough- a timeless sight.

Landscape in Andalusia, Spain

PA736  Landscape with Olive trees. Oil on paper 38 x 56 cm Neil Bolton Fine Art Painter

Painted on location in Spain, I am reminded of Soutine's paintings in the French Pyrenees when I paint here, white painted buildings clinging onto hillsides swathed in twisted tree forms. The calligraphic shapes of the Olive trunks here are natural.
