Dales Landscape

PA808 Dales landscape2 Oil on canvas 31 x 46cm Neil Bolton Fine Art Painter
Return to a landscape I paint often on a day when a blue grey colour predominated in the pastures and trees. The telegraph poles remind us of the strong winds that are usually making their presence felt!

Winter reprise

PA775 Winter reprise . Oil on board 31 x 36cm Neil Bolton Fine Art Painter
A day of cold, changeable weather much more typical of Winter rather than Spring. The painting went through many changes too, the final state being a composite record of cloud movement and fleeting light, something that had some truth to my overall impression of the time painting.

Spring fields

PA771 Spring fields. Oil on board 31 x 36cm Neil Bolton Fine Art Painter
Painted in the North Yorkshire landscape, some vast fields sown with wheat. I had to discern different hues of green and use the diagonal tractor lines to portray the receding plane of the land.

Spring landscape

PA769 Spring, High Burton, North Yorkshire. Oil on board 23 x 30cm Neil Bolton Fine Art Painter SOLD
Wheat fields showing young growth, the landscape is predominantly green at this time of year. In this painting I have tried to achieve a harmony and portray the variations in the green hues. This painting was exhibited in the Harrogate Open exhibition at the Mercer Gallery where it was sold.

Fires on moorland

PA767 Fires on the moor. Oil on canvas board 21 x 34cm Neil Bolton Fine Art Painter
The burning of heather on the moorlands near where I live. This is a contentious issue but for me the interest is in the visual drama of the smoke pillars which in a painting can have many connotations. Painted outside where the direct experience of reality/nature is stimulating and potent for painting.

Olive tree on a hillside

DR139 Olive tree. Charcoal on paper 38 x 56 cm Neil Bolton Fine Art Painter
Plein air drawing of an Olive tree on a hillside in Andalusia. This particular mountainous region can be surprisingly windy making drawing board and easel unstable unlike my subject which has endured many years of elemental forces. More work from this series can be seen on my website

Painted on location in Spain, you will have to imagine the heavily scented air and the massed choir of attendant bees.

Sierra Maroma, Andalusia, Spain

PA741 Maroma, Invierno. Oil on canvas 40 x 60 cm Neil Bolton Fine Art Painter

Painted in rough changeable weather, the easel and canvas blown to the ground on a few occasions by powerful gusts of mountain wind that happen without warning and surprise with their ferocity. This range of mountains are close to my sister's house and form an impressive backdrop to the lower surrounding foothills

Olive trees, Spain

PA739 Olive trees, Spain. Oil on paper 38 x 56 cm Neil Bolton Fine Art Painter

Painted on location during my recent painting trip to Andalusia, Spain. Olive trees for me are a fascinating and absorbing subject to paint, the foliage presents an enigmatic range of colours in the strong Southern sunlight of Spain; warm blue greens to steely greys contrasting at times with strong shadows. This group of trees are at the end of my sister's garden in rural Andalusia and are tended by farmers who I have seen ploughing the ground beneath the trees using mules to draw the plough- a timeless sight.

Landscape in Andalusia, Spain

PA736  Landscape with Olive trees. Oil on paper 38 x 56 cm Neil Bolton Fine Art Painter

Painted on location in Spain, I am reminded of Soutine's paintings in the French Pyrenees when I paint here, white painted buildings clinging onto hillsides swathed in twisted tree forms. The calligraphic shapes of the Olive trunks here are natural.
